HERA-2-Lithuania project: Strengthening the prevention and control of infectious diseases
– Implementation of the new workflow

The HERA-2-Lithuania project is progressing toward strengthening our preparedness for future health threats. This initiative focuses on expanding laboratory capacities, enhancing bioinformatics solutions, and increasing genomic surveillance of infectious agents to better understand and manage potential outbreaks. By conducting national-level testing and integrating genomic data into international databases, HERA-2-Lithuania aims to detect new pathogens and emerging variants more effectively. Achieving this goal will strengthen our ability to respond to health crises quickly and accurately, minimising their impact on society.

Conference “The Role of Genomic Surveillance in Strengthening Public Health Security through International Collaboration”

The first international conference organised by NPHSL took place on 27 November 2025, bringing together experts, institutions, and public health professionals from various countries. The event focused on the importance of genomic surveillance, its role in outbreak investigations, and how international cooperation can enhance public health security.

Representatives from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the European Union Reference Laboratory for Public Health on Antimicrobial Resistance in Bacteria (EURL-PH-AMR), and AMR reference laboratories from Latvia, Poland, and Estonia took part in the event. They shared valuable experiences, practical examples, and insights into the benefits and challenges of genomic surveillance.
